How can I prepare for the course?

There is a dress code for anyone teaching a lesson at the TEFL Institute: You must dress professionally, as you would be required in a Thai school environment. You can acquire inexpensive and excellently made custom tailored shirts, slacks, shoes and jackets here in Bangkok, or be sure to bring over a couple of sets so you are “sartorially” ready to teach!

• Buy a digital camera if you do not have one, and purchase additional picture storage cards for the camera. You will be able to keep a photo diary of your time here, use pictures in your class (see below), email them home etc. Prices for electronics are not low in Thailand, so it is generally better to buy cameras at home.

• Unless you are going to be a backpacking traveler who does not want to burden him- or herself with the expensive equipment , consider the purchase of a laptop: It will be great to create and store your lesson plans, photos, and teaching materials plus keep your life organized in a hassle free way. There are many places with WIFI access in Bangkok and surroundings, and it is free on our premises.

• Look at your home town through the eyes of a tourist-take pictures of anything noteworthy, picturesque, or different-in the near future you will be able to show your students where you are from and have them describe what they see on the photos etc. A great way to enhance mutual understanding!

• Sit in on as many English lessons taught in your home town as possible: It is easy enough to do, just call volunteer agencies such as the YMCA or YWCA to find out when they offer classes for Non English speakers, and ask to observe a lesson or two. It will be very informative and will help you understand the situation English learners and teachers face in this environment. Mention your reason for wanting to do so, then interview the instructor regarding problems, benefits, disadvantages and challenges they face as teachers. See if the instructors use certain materials the students really enjoy, then determine if you want to buy a copy. Take notes, and bring them along to Bangkok, then evaluate if your experiences match those of the interviewed after some lessons. It will be an eye opening experience!

• Read up on Thailand and its culture: we recommend the Lonely Planet guidebook series, and the “Culture Shock: Thailand” book for a good introduction to the complexities and details of cultural differences. Have a look at the www.lonelyplanet.com website and see Thailand.

How do we learn about Thai culture?

In order to be a successful teacher, you need to be able to connect with your students. Knowing the foreign culture with all its intricacies is essential in making this connection. We have practice- and activity based methods to get you first to a deeper understanding of your own culture before getting you on a complete comfort level with the Thai culture.

Is a teaching license by the Thai Ministry of Education enough?

To work legally in a Thai school environment, it is required that you have a teaching license. While in Thailand, it is enough to have a Thai teaching license along with your academic credentials to work as a teacher, but if you ever decide to leave Thailand, the Thai teaching license in combination with the earned US graduate credits in education is an additional benefit. Not only are these earned graduate credits acknowledged and recognized by any and all academic entities worldwide, but they will enable you to complete an advanced degree, should you decide to pursue such an endeavor.

What is TEFL?

TEFL, pronounced 'teffel', stands for "Teaching English as a Foreign Language". The teaching of English in an environment where English is not already the predominant language, such as in a non-English-speaking country, to someone whose first language is not English Example: Teaching English to non-English speaking Thais in Thailand.

What is TESL?

TESL, proncounced 'tessel', stands for "Teaching English as a Second Language". The teaching of English in an environment where English is the predominant language, to someone whose first language is not English.
Example: Teaching English to non-English speaking immigrants in England or the US.

What is TESOL?

TESOL, pronounced 'teesol' , stands for "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (or) Teaching English as a Second or Other Language"
This acronym might be a substitute for TESL more than for TEFL. It is sometimes preferred over TESL because English can be a third, fourth or fifth, etc. language to a student.

Why do you need a TEFL qualification?

Improved Performance
Whether you already have taught English to foreign learners for several years or are just starting out, you undoubtedly want to do your best.  Often, caring teachers of English with a long history of English language instruction are the ones who most acutely realize they could do better - with the benefits of formal training techniques acquired through a professionally-taught TEFL course.

Recognition
A TEFL certificate from a respected school helps you secure quality teaching positions in Thailand and in any part of the world. Our TEFL Certificate is provided under International TEFL standards and is Asia's only graduate level accredited course.

Who can attend the course?
Anyone who possesses excellent English skills and wants to do an effective job - or more effective job - teaching English to Asian learners, particularly Thais.  This includes Thais and other Asian trainees.

How our TEFL Program is different:

Experience
The TEFL Institute is a school of high academic standards.  Our teachers have instructed in many companies, schools of all levels and government agencies.  They are teaching in many primary and high schools, both government and private.  We depend upon word-of-mouth recommendations of our quality, integrity and professionalism.  The International University Standard TEFL Certificate from The TEFL Institute is valued and respected by language academies across Thailand, Asia, and the world.

Customized Learning
Our TEFL Program is designed to meet the needs of Asian learners of English in general; and to Asian business persons in particular.  It is geared towards teaching Thai and other Asian students in the real environments and cultures of Asia.

Teaching Practice
Our TEFL students practice their newly acquired skills in three different teaching environments outside of course hours: One on one teaching of adults, small group setting with adult students, and a Thai classroom setting with young learners. You will be teaching for a minimum of eight hours as part of the course, and have the opportunity to teach many more hours if interested. All practice teaching is observed and supervised by a trainer who will help you be a better teacher.

Your "Practice Teaching" Students
We at TEFL believe in helping you while helping the less fortunate in our midst. All of us here donate our time twice a week to teach English for free, and we have teamed up with the non-profit Fatima Foundation which offers a variety of classes geared towards helping disadvantaged Thai women attain essential job skills and a healthy sense of self. Classes include typing, computer skills, handicraft and English. You will help teach speaking and listening skills to their beginning and intermediate learners using a variety of academic texts. You are certainly welcome to donate additional teaching time upon completion of the course.

What to expect
Teaching practice begins in the second week of your TEFL course. All practice teaching is observed and supervised by your trainer, and you will receive both written and verbal feedback after each lesson. You will start by teaching one on one in week two of the course, then move to teach a small group of adults before reaching the third stage of your teaching practice, which is the supervised teaching of a class in a Thai public school. You will practice teach at least eight hours during your course, but you can opt to practice teach additional hours to further hone your teaching skills.

All TEFL classmates are invited to attend their peers' practice teaching sessions: to observe and to provide moral support! An experienced observer will evaluate your performance, providing deserved praise and helpful suggestions for improvement.

Class Size
We have a maximum enrollment number of six students in each TEFL course. This makes for a beneficial, fruitful and individualized experiential learning process for all TEFL course participants.

Why this course?

We created this course to give you as many options as possible:
What we teach you will not narrow your career path to only be a teacher of English but will enable you to teach any subject matter you care about in an effective, innovative and efficient manner.

With what you learn with us, you can start your teaching career as a well trained professional, or you can continue your higher education and professional development, earn a Master's degree here in Thailand (have a look at www.uecthai.com/bsc) and become eligible for international school teaching positions!

As this course has been licensed and accepted by The Thai Ministry of Education, it allows you to apply for a Thai teacher's license, which further simplifies your search for work in Thailand. To read what one of our graduates wrote about our course Click here.

What are international schools and why should I know about them?

In Bangkok there are approximately 50 international schools. This large number of schools can be separated into a sizeable number of schools using English and Thai, and sometimes English, Thai and Chinese as the languages of instruction, and a smaller number of international schools, accredited by Western or Australian school academic accreditation agencies, and hiring experienced and credentialed teachers primarily at international recruiting conferences annually sponsored by International Schools Services (www.iss.org) or Search Associates (www.search-associates.com). In Bangkok, there are four such top of the league international schools: The United Nations related New International School Thailand, NIST, (www.nist.ac.th), the International School Bangkok (www.isb.ac.th), Ruamrudee International School (www.rism.ac.th) and the British curriculum oriented  Bangkok Patana School (www.patana.ac.th).

Working at international schools does not only provide teachers and teaching assistants with the latest and best in teaching opportunities, supplies and professional development opportunities such as a Buffalo State Master's degree, (currently offered at NIST and ISB), but also a substantial salary, housing allowance, roundtrip flights per year etc. We are proud to mention that a number of our graduates have been hired as full time English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers and teacher assistants at above schools, upon graduation from the TEFL Institute.

International schools around the globe belong to organizations representing their best interests and providing for healthy exchange of ideas among international teachers in their geographic area, such as at the East Asia Regional Conference for Overseas Schools EARCOS (www.earcos.org).

The TEFL Institute with its graduate level accredited tefl course opens to you a completely new world of opportunities, be it training you to teach in a Thai government school, or getting you on your way to an advanced degree and an international school teaching position in top schools around the globe!   It is all about options, and the more you know, the better you can decide.

No other course provides you with such choices!

What certification do I receive upon graduation from the TEFL course?

The numbered and dated 120-hour TEFL course certificate indicates the cooperation of the TEFL Institute with Buffalo State College, SUNY, New York, USA, the fact that the TEFL Institute is a participating member of the ThaiTESOL organization and the fact and date of your graduation. A separate grade report indicates the results you have received for your course work, practice teaching etc. and a narrative report in Thai and English regarding your performance as a practicing teacher is included as part of your initial teacher portfolio. The license number issued by the Thai Ministry of Education is included in the documents to certify the validity of the TEFL course to local authorities.

Recognition

The TEFL Institute issues to all successful graduates a TEFL certificate which is Thai Ministry of Education approved, and which indicates the US university graduate level work completed by the individual mentioned on the certificate.  This shows to all interested parties around the world that your completed course is academically sound and has been well scrutinized by independent agencies. This established legitimacy helps you secure quality teaching positions in Thailand and in any part of the world.

Can you help me with a visa?

If you currently reside outside of Thailand and have paid your course deposit (http://www.teflthai.com/enroll.htm), we can issue a letter to the Thai embassy or consulate of your choice indicating that you are enrolled in or course. This will enable you to receive a three month visa, which in turn gves you enough time to take the course and enjoy Thailand or secure work in that time. Just email us for more information at info@teflthai.com.

What to wear for teaching?

The teaching profession is held in very high esteem in Thailand, and teachers are role models for their students and the public in general. This is why we ask our trainees to dress as professionals while doing any teaching in connection with the TEFL Institute. Fortunately Thailand is the best place to get clothes custom tailored inexpensively, or just remember to bring a set or two of "interview" outfits with you, and you will be well prepared for success.

How is this course different?

• Small Groups of Learners
We have a maximum enrollment number of six students in each TEFL course. This makes for a beneficial, fruitful and individualized experiential learning process for all TEFL course participants.

• Maximum Teaching Exposure
Our course includes a minimum of supervised eight hours practice teaching in three different teaching environments: one on one, small group, and Thai classroom teaching. Practice teaching in each of these settings helps you choose your teaching preference later on. More practice teaching can be arranged.

• Making a Difference
All of our practice teaching is done for Thai students who do not have the funds to pay for English lessons. All of us donate our time to teach English lessons every week to the less fortunate, and invite you to do the same: You will make a world of difference!

• Progress through Education
When you take our course you earn nine graduate credits in education from Buffalo State College, State University of New York (SUNY), NY, USA. You can complete the 21 credits of the 30 credit SUNY Master's degree in fourteen months in Bangkok, Thailand! This is the only TEFL course in Asia accredited with graduate level course credits!

• Creating Quality Educators
Private schools, corporations as well as government schools have been eagerly hiring our graduates since our first class in 2001. The need for respectful, professional and knowledgeable educators in Thailand is growing. If you are keen on teaching at one of the many excellent schools around Bangkok, let us help you prepare your resume and yourself so you can obtain the teaching position of your choice.

• Quality Instructors
All of our instructors currently teach English as a foreign language themselves and have done graduate course work in education. This way, you get not only the latest academic wisdom but practical insight from real teachers out there!

• Understanding Thai Culture
In order to be a successful teacher, you need to be able to reach out to your students. Knowing the foreign culture is essential in making this connection. You will learn and understand the subtle and not so subtle cultural differences as part of our course.

Do I need to have a university degree to take the TEFL course?

No, you do not. Fluency in the English language, an eagerness to learn, being open to new ideas, respect for your fellow students and the willingness to do what it takes to become a professional teacher is however essential.

Is there an age limit for students wanting to take this TEFL course?

No there is not. As long as you are eager to learn new things, are open to new ideas, have respect for your fellow (and possibly younger) students and the willingness to do what it takes to become a professional teacher you will enjoy the course.

I have a Bachelor's degree and want to start working on my Master's degree while teaching in Thailand. How can the TEFL Institute help me?

The TEFL Institute in cooperation with United Education Consultants, Thailand, enables eligible TEFL Institute graduates to complete a fully accredited US Master's degree program in little more than one year with Buffalo State, State University of New York (SUNY), while teaching in Thailand. Graduate courses are taught on weekends to accommodate the busy schedules of teachers. The TEFL Institute is the only teacher training facility in South East Asia to offer its graduates this opportunity. For more information and enrollment details please visit www.uecthai.com

Do I need to have a university degree to teach in Thailand?

That depends on where you want to teach. The Thai Ministry of Education requires teachers at Government, private and international schools to have a Bachelor’s degree in Education or graduate diploma in education and have passed the 20 hour Thai Language and Culture Course, at which point they must apply for a Thai teaching license. Individuals wanting to teach at university, language schools, corporate English teaching or conduct tutoring lessons privately are not by law required to have a degree or a teaching license at this point, but the hiring institution may require additional qualifications. Thai university degree programs, accepted worldwide, are available for part- or full time enrollment for anyone wanting to get a degree.

Do I need to be a native English speaker to take the TEFL course?

No, you do not need to be a native English speaker. You should however be able to read and comprehend university level textbooks, be able to express yourself in a manner consistent with English language rules, and be ready to answer questions and add your opinion in a classroom setting.

Is it worth reserving my seat early for a particular course?

Since we have set our maximum number of students per course at six , yes, we do reach capacity for courses rather quickly. It is therefore advisable to reserve your seat early for a course date you have in mind. You can reserve your seat by following the instructions on http://www.teflthai.com/enroll.htm.

What topics are covered as part of the TEFL course?
The major areas of focus are:

1. Teaching methodology and techniques. Classroom strategies, identifying objectives. Lesson planning activities and methods.

2. An introduction to Asian and specifically Thai-people, culture, language and specific teaching-learning problems you might encounter.

3. How to correct English grammar: a thorough teacher-friendly review, aimed at correcting typical learner errors by practicing conversation interactively and dynamically.

4. A review of teaching books and resources, how to use them effectively in accordance with specific course requirements, and how to use them for efficient lesson planning.

5. A look at specialized language teaching (ESP): children and younger learners, business English and writing, academic English, vocational training (hotels, tour guides, banks, airline/aviation and technical English), and more.

6. Alternative teaching methods: Games and activities, post-grad reviews and teacher development.

7. Course design and curriculum development.

8. Maximum in-class teaching practice and critique.

9. The real world of institutionalized teaching. How to schedule your teaching times and be most effective. Time management, part and full-time options, etc.  Visa and work-permits, teacher licensing and pro-active job placement.

10. And, very importantly: Teaching Practice in a 'live' classroom with real students, monitored and evaluated outside of class learning hours.

Will I teach during the course?
Yes, you will do this during your 'practice teaching' period under close supervision by our trainers, who will help you in case you need it. You will start with one-on-one teaching, followed by teaching small groups of English learners, and in the end teach a class of teenagers or children. As a result of these practical experiences you will be exposed to the different challenges and pleasures of teaching the various ages and skill levels.

Who will be my students during my practice teaching?

Our students are all Thai individuals who want to learn English but cannot afford to pay for classes. They are generally members of the lower to lowest rung on the socio-economic ladder in Thailand, and knowing a second language will greatly improve their chances to obtain well paying work. The observed practice teaching hours will start in the second week of your five week course:
While the initial one on one teaching hours will be held on our premises, the majority of small group practice teaching hours will be off site, which will allow you a look at organizations aiding the less fortunate in Thai society.

The TEFL Institute is working with the Fatima Center, run by the Good Shepherd Sisters, and teachers at the Bangkok School for the Blind. The students who are part of the Fatima Center are Thai women between the ages of 12 - 19 years. The non-profit organization offers educational and vocational training to young girls and women struggling to break out of the unending cycle of poverty. Under the expert direction of those whose sole concern is the welfare of others, the Fatima Center has become as self-sufficient as possible. Education plays a large role in helping these women trying to escape poverty. They are encouraged to enter education programs and to further their studies, thus enabling them to help themselves. You will practice teaching English with your trainer for an assigned class at the Fatima Center.

The Bangkok School for the Blind has a very enthusiastic staff of Thai teachers of English who do tremendous work with the blind and visually impaired children at this boarding facility, and the TEFL Institute practicing teachers come to share their gained knowledge and expertise with the teachers in a relaxed setting. There are always volunteer opportunities available for our course graduates at the School for the Blind, and few children are more thankful for any time you can spare and spend than the children at the School for the Blind. Not emotionally easy, but an incredibly fulfilling experience!

Teaching at the Thai government school is the final step in your practice teaching experience. A classroom of up to fifty active middle school children awaits to give you a first hand feel for teaching in this type of an environment. While it may sound daunting, all our practicing teachers spend time observing lessons taught in the various environments before it is their turn, and the encouraging trainer always stands by for help or advice if needed.

Do I need to have teaching experience?
No, you do not need to have teaching experience.  Of course, it is valued but not essential.  Our training program will provide you with the essential concepts and skills and strategies to successfully teach different levels of students and for different purposes.  An important part of our program is supervised practice teaching for a minimum of six hours with actual Thai students either at our language school or at a foundation with which we closely work.

What about jobs?

Usually newcomers have questions like, "Can you get me a job? How much can I earn? Can I get a work permit?"

Most people who have not taught before think in terms of teaching English only and need to ask themselves many allied questions.  Where do I want to teach? In Bangkok, in towns, or in the countryside? Who do I want to teach? Young children, teenagers, or adults?

You will find the answers to some of these questions during the course.  You will start to appreciate that the most important task after finishing the course is getting as much experience as possible, as quickly as possible.  It is not unusual for you to be asked to teach a course with only a couple of days of notice.  You will find that there are no materials and you will only have the briefest outline of your students' capabilities, and what you are expected to teach them.  In general, if you teach in a school outside Bangkok, you will be expected to sign a contract for one year.  The pay will be Baht 30,000 to Baht 40,000 per month, and you may get help with accommodation, health care, and a work permit.  Please remember that in many parts of Thailand that income will go a very long way, as the cost of living is so low.  Your Thai colleagues will be lucky to be earning one third of your wage.  In many of these places, however, you may not find too many people who speak English, and books, magazines and newspapers may be rare.  This may appeal to some, but don't forget you are there for one year!!

In the Bangkok metropolitan area with an estimated population of 10 million, the available work is a lot more varied, and many people seem to end up doing a number of different classes at different schools.  The current employment situation in Bangkok is that we receive daily requests from kindergartens, primary and high schools, international schools and from universities as well to provide qualified teachers.  Thus, our students have a wide range of teaching job choices that we can offer them. The pay in the Bangkok area will be Baht 30,000 to Baht 40,000 (some schools offer more) and they also may provide you help with accommodation, health care and a work permit.  If you get hired on a per job basis, the rates tend to be between Baht 350/hr and Baht 550/hr, e.g. teaching a specific class at a school for a 30-hour conversation course.  The implication is that, if you do the course well, there will be more work for you.

What about living & accommodation?

In Bangkok, there are hotels that you rent as normal by the day, or negotiate for weekly or monthly rates, even in cheap hotels this normally works out as an expensive option.

Some apartments or "serviced apartments" listed below will normally rent for periods of 1 week or more.  Obviously, the longer you stay the more you can negotiate the price. If you rent for the month, you will often be asked to pay 1 month rent plus 1 month deposit.  Within this there are many variations: some places include electricity and water, and some don't.

We can recommend the following accommodations which are in close distance to the school, and we can also assist you if needed:
