Practice Teaching at Ratchaburi School

front

It is with great pleasure that we announce our newly formed partnership with Ratchaburi Temple School. The school was established over 92 years ago,  in 1923. Currently there are 355 students and 19 teachers. Classes begin from Pre-Primary through to High School. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and students for making us feel very welcome and a special thanks to Ms. Noi for making all of this possible. We look forward to visiting Ratchaburi temple School again very soon.

Our November 2015 trainees were the inaugral representatives of UEC TEFL Thai to teach at the school. P5, P6, M1, M2 & M3 were all taught an English lesson  by our hardworking team &  here’s what they had to say about their experience:

"" Sana

“Teaching at the government school in Ratchaburi was such a great experience. The school had a very welcoming atmosphere and it felt more like a little community than it did a school. Although most of the students were quite shy, they seemed really excited to have foreign teachers teach them for the first time. Overall it really gives you a perspective on what teaching at a small government school would be like, and I’m glad we got to experience it first hand.” Sana

"Going to Ratchaburi and teaching was one of my favorite experiences at the TEFL Institute. The kids were excited to have us there. My class was a blast and they quickly opened up and learned a couple new food words. Following that, it was great to see everyone else teach a full size class and just how far we progressed over the course. It was one of the longer days during the course but it was entirely worth it and even now people are surprised that I had that much teaching experience during the course!" Hunter

““I taught 30 Prathom 6 students and the experience was invaluable. The students enjoyed the lesson and so did I!! I will be teaching English in Government schools in Prachin Buri Province, and I now feel more confident to deliver English lessons to classes of any size.” Graham

UEC TEFL Thai volunteering experience

We are pleased to introduce Andrew Liefer, a 2015 UEC TEFL Thai alumnus.

“I am a graduate of the UEC TEFL Thai 120 hour teacher training course, and have been able to take advantage of continued volunteer teaching opportunities provided by the school. As someone who has decided not to seek immediate full-time teaching employment, I have found great benefit in volunteering with the school for the last 4 months.

I graduated from the course in March of 2015 and have continued to teach with them on a volunteer basis. My teaching skills have continued to improve under the continuing guidance of my instructor, and I have been able to set my own schedule in regard to how many classes I want to teach.

The volunteer teaching offered by UEC is a unique opportunity. The classes are offered at an outreach center for less fortunate women and children. I have been teaching one class of adults and two classes of teenage girls. The classroom environment is extremely welcoming, all the students are very respectful and eager to learn, and this has allowed me to gain more confidence in my abilities. This volunteer option is an excellent introduction into the world of teaching, especially for someone who has no prior teaching experience. Recommended.”

Our two cents:

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to “Andy” for his continued commitment to our community volunteering endeavours. UEC TEFL Thai is proud to be a part of The Fatima Centre English learning program, and has been for more than ten years. We developed and implemented the English program specifically for the girls and adults, and we have seen many success stories emerge over the years. It is not only an opportunity for us to give back to the community, but also to introduce our trainees to another area of education in Thailand.

The Fatima Centre of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Thailand is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing the quality of life of all those in need regardless of their religious affiliation. Under the expert direction of those whose sole concern is the welfare of others, the Fatima Centre provides opportunities for women and young girls at risk in the community and to break out of the unending cycle of poverty.

How to Teach Large Classes

A local teaching colleague looks at me knowingly and hands the new foreign teacher in this prestigious Thai Government school a small, portable speaker with a microphone. ”Here, you will need this for your class”. While I appreciate the gesture, I wonder if there are better ways to work with more than fifty children in a small classroom..

The concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy is certainly true in teaching. When teachers believe their students are incapable of independent thinking, lack creativity and have no interest in anything education related, then students may well start exhibiting these “qualities”.
