In order to upgrade the teaching quality of their foreign teachers, two Thai Government schools have requested that the TEFL Institute conduct multi-day training sessions on the latest teaching methodologies and classroom practices for student centered learning on their campuses. The latest teaching practices presented at the recent EARCOS conference (www.earcos.org) were incorporated to provide hands-on advice to the resident foreign teachers and enable a practical exchange of information to improve student learning in the new school year. The latest group of TEFL graduates had the opportunity to create and lead activities for an English language summer camp, held at a Thai Government School and attended by 100 Thai Middle School children from the ERIC Area One School Network. All children had been sponsored by the Thai Ministry of Education. The three day English camp included a trip to the Bangkok Zoo, English games, songs and real life interaction with our graduates who enjoyed the experience as much as all participants. The Thai Government School was tremendously appreciative, and all TEFL participants were given letters of thanks and a certificate. Pictures

Congratulations to Ms. Connie Hui as the first TEFL Institute graduate to complete the Buffalo State Master’s degree program! Connie, a mother of two and full-time school administrator, had started the program last year upon graduating from the 120 hour TEFL Institute course, and was able to complete the remaining program in a little over one year. In her words: “I never thought I could do it, but I have succeeded and learned so much along the way!” Connie, we wish you the best of luck and a well deserved break: Congratulations!

A new group of TEFL Institute course graduates has taken the opportunity to work on their graduate degree with Buffalo State, State University of New York! The TEFL Institute graduating class prepared and facilitated a three day conference for more than fourty Thai teachers of English with numerous workshops at Sathree Nontaburee School, Thai Government School from May 6, 2007 through May 8, 2007. This event was part of the Education Resources Information Center’s (ERIC) Bangkok Area 1 and 4 initiative to provide Thai teachers with professional development opportunities. Teachers and representatives from the Thai government schools in the two school districts attended and participated. This was a distinctly different teaching experience for the TEFL course participants who were very excited to share their newly acquired skills and abilities with their Thai colleagues in workshop settings and the very friendly environment. Our graduates received certificates and reference letters from the sponsoring institutions as well as impromptu employment offers from the Thai school heads. We are happy to have received an honorable mention on the Transitions Abroad website, one of the premier US websites for university students interested in overseas experiences.
Richard, who completed our TEFL course last year and whose girlfriend soon after also came to Thailand from Australia to take our course, wrote the piece and sent it in. He let us know of its publication and we are certainly proud of and thankful for the kind words Richard had for our course. We thank Richard and wish him and his girlfriend good luck with their new teaching position in Taiwan! To read Richard's article Click here.

Good fun and plenty of food was the main focus of this year’s first annual Christmas barbecue, with Luke as the expert on the bbq controls, and all others busily taking care of the grilled shrimp, steak and vegetarian delights. A good time for former graduates to catch up on what has been happening and exchanging the latest from the teaching field, it has already been decided that this will become an annual event, if not a semi- annual one. Make sure you email us to get on our mailing list so you don’t miss the next bbq extravaganza!
